OPEN CALL | Artist for participatory project at De Rinck community centre

Nederlandse versie | en français

Community Centre De Maalbeek in Etterbeek is seeking an artist to work co-creatively with the neighbourhood around the Place Van Meyel to strengthen the ties between neighbourhood and community centre.

Co-creation with the neighbourhood

You will develop an artistic project with the neighbourhood. This is done co-creatively: the neighbourhood becomes a partner and co-owner of the concept and its development.  The project must meet the needs and requirements of the neighbourhood.  As artist, you will provide a clear artistic vision.

What do you do?

As artist, you will design a co-creative trajectory:

  •  Together with the neighbourhood you will develop a strong artistic end result supported by the neighbourhood.

  • You will make a personal commitment to the neighbourhood and will review the various facets of co-creation: the idea, the process as well as the end result are supported by the participants. This means your presence in the neighbourhood is paramount.

  • Together with the community centre's sociocultural worker, you will generate commitment on the part of the neighbourhood and residents, and act with respect for the participants.

  • You will pay special attention to the voiceless and will actively seek out their voice.

  • You will be working within the proposed total budget.

About the 'Place Van Meyel' area

We want to work in the area around the Place Van Meyel. This neighbourhood is near Community Centre De Maalbeek and adjacent to the Cinquantenaire Park. It is a residential neighbourhood where expats as well as young families live. Some remain in the neighbourhood for a long time, while others are rather fleeting passers-by. The neighbourhood is home to partners such as Atelier 210 and merchants on Rue Général Leman.

Community Centre De Maalbeek is already conducting artistic research with photographers Renée Lorie and Erien Withouck from March to June 2023 in the form of the participatory project 'Take Me To Your Place'. They ask local residents about their ideal place to live, their dream place ... This research will result in a physical publication (magazine or book) and an expo in the community centre.

At the same time, we are active in the Place Van Meyel: we organise monthly activities from March to June 2023 and a play street during the month of August. The artist can certainly use the knowledge gained and contacts established from this preliminary process.

About CC De Maalbeek

Community Centre De Maalbeek is an open house in Etterbeek: encounters, growth and creativity are at its core. We are a Dutch-speaking organisation, but are open to all languages the vibrant European quarter has to offer. Community Centre De Maalbeek focuses on Etterbeek residents, but wants to attend to Brussels residents and expats in and around Etterbeek as well.  Our goal is to bring the people of Brussels closer together. In Community Centre De Maalbeek, we do this by curating our own cultural and artistic offer for young and old alike, but also by supporting residents in their own projects. The Community Centre De Maalbeek building is quite small, so we like to go out and get to know local residents and neighbourhoods. Collaboration is in our DNA, we often gather a lot of partners around us. Working in public spaces is our second nature.

CC De Maalbeek is one of the 22 Brussels community centres that make up N22 Brussels
