OPEN CALL | Artist sought for Participatory Project at Community Centre Ten Noey

Nederlandstalige versie

Community Centre Ten Noey in Saint-Josse-Ten-Node is looking for an artist to work co-creatively with local residents.  You will work on an artistic project that focuses on playful interventions in public space. Are you that creative jack-of-all-trades who knows how to translate the richness of Saint-Josse into connecting art?

Co-creation with the neighbourhood

We are looking for an artist to work with local residents on playful interventions in public spaces. The project is all about wonder and connection, challenging everyday life in Saint-Josse in a positive and creative way. Consider interventions that explore the municipality's unique morphology (highs and lows, views, small spaces) or play with the contrast between the hyper-local and the international. Inspiration can be found in typical Saint-Josse features, such as plastic flower boxes, street sweepers or the makeshift terraces of tea houses and cafes.

Together with Ten Noey's creative project officer, you will explore possible starting points, meet key people and discover new leads.

The project aims to:

  • Create an accessible and temporary community: everyone should feel welcome, without barriers or exclusivity.
  • Make connections at micro and macro levels: from streets and neighbourhoods to the entire municipality.
  • Leave a sustainable legacy: the end result must remain visible and accessible even after the project ends.

The project will ideally start in spring 2025 and conclude during Josée's summer programming.

What will you do?

As an artist, you will design a co-creative pathway:

  • You will work with the target group towards a powerful artistic end result that is supported by them.
  • You will engage with the target group and various neighbourhood partners yourself. Together, you will go through all the facets of co-creation: from idea to process to end result, where the input of participants and partners is essential. Your presence will play an important role in this.
  • Along with the community centre's sociocultural worker, you will generate involvement on the part of the target group and partners, and act with respect for the participants.
  • You will pay special attention to those whose voice is not always heard and will actively seek out these voices.
  • You will work within the specified budget.

About Community Centre Ten Noey

Community Centre Ten Noey is building creativity and connectivity in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and the Leopold Quarter. The community centre serves as a home for a wide range of people and organisations. The offerings range from creative workshops for children and adults to collaborations with partners such as CVO Brussel, Femma Quartier and Provelo.

An important element of the operation is Josée, a collaboration with Bib Joske, the municipality's Dutch-speaking Affairs Department and the Community School. These projects encourage meeting and co-creation, with a special focus on "Dutch-speakers", including everyone with an interest in the Dutch language, regardless of their level.

Ten Noey takes an emancipatory approach: the focus is not on limitations, but on the strength and the potential of individuals and communities. Everyone - whether audience, participants or partners - is seen as co-creator, co-inventor and co-builder.

In addition, Ten Noey actively responds to the rich dynamics of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. The centre is constantly looking for ways to create connections between communities and help build an inclusive society. Projects such as Construire l'été, Camping Josée and Cabanon d’hiver bring movement to the neighbourhood, both literally and figuratively.

About Saint-Josse-Ten Node

Saint-Josse-ten-Noode is known as the smallest, youngest, poorest and most densely populated municipality in Belgium. This brings challenges, but the community also has another side: a vibrant community full of diversity, creativity and dynamism. The mix of internationally oriented hubs (such as North Station and Madou) and the intimate atmosphere of squares and streets makes Saint-Josse unique.

In addition, the municipality has rich artistic and creative talent, both among its residents and in its organisations. The associative network is complex, with organisations ranging from welfare organisations to art collectives. This network extends from hyper-local to supra-local and provides a strong foundation for collaboration and creativity.
